Retirement of
Mr S. W. Walling

Mr Walling retired recently after 46 years service, most of which was at Head Office.
He joined the Accident department in 1925 from Kendal Grammar School, transferring to the motor department in 1934. After War service in the Royal Engineers he rejoined the department and became a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute in 1947. He was appointed Joint Home Motor Superintendent in 1954 and Home Motor Manager in 1964 - a position he held until retirement.
Mr Walling, a widower for some years, is active in local musical circles, having been organist for over 25 years at St. John's Presbyterian Church, Kendal.
At a luncheon party recently Mr Walling was presented with a pair of binoculars and a cheque by Mr D. W. Holloway, and Mr Walling was entertained by his former executive colleagues at a dinner party at the Crooklands Hotel on 25 June. Those present included Mr Holloway and other senior pensioners including Mr A. Murdoch, formerly joint General Manager and now Director, Mr R. N. Holloway, formerly Assistant General Manager, and Mr J. W. Tolfree, formerly Accident Manager who was, in fact, Mr Walling's first departmental Manager.
