Mrs Quinn) has returned to
her duties in the motor department. Bob Nichol is busy setting
up in his new abode in Oxford, and Miss Arthurs leaves the
Company after 18 years of long and dedicated service to a
new life in the Channel Islands. Presentations were made to
them all followed by send-offs suitable to the occasion. Colleagues
of Bob and Lorna, now scattered round the country, added to
the contributions. We extend our heartiest greetings and best
wishes to them all for the future.
A number of new faces are seen around the office and to them
all we extend a warm welcome. Mr Norman Clough joins us on
transfer from Bolton, adding strength to our field force.
We extend to him and his family every good wish in their new
surroundings.
Within the office Hazel Swift, June Andrews and Susan Harrison
have recently joined the motor department `harem'. All requests
for transfers will be returned unopened. Kay Merryweather
and Teresa Ryce have also brought more visits from the field
force than in the past, whilst our new telephonist/ typist,
Judy Steer, may have to cope with a few more lines in future
judging by the number of incoming calls during the past few
weeks. Another newcomer to our ranks is Colin Brandi starting
on his rounds in the fire department. Jill Ludlow joins our
accounts department following the gap left by Stan Harper
who left us |

after many years' service.
The branch manager made a presentation on behalf of the staff
to Stan Harper which was followed by the appropriate festivities.
Away from the office all ablebodied men, well supported by
the ladies, have been showing their expertise in five-a-side
soccer-indoor - putting up a creditable performance. An unfortunate
decision lost them the chance to be amongst the finalists.
In ideal cricketing weather in May we met the `N.E.M.' to
complete the 1970 Institute KnockOut Competition. With some
8o runs to our credit it proved insufficient against steady
batting by the `N.E.M.' However, we were able to take a few
useful wickets and keep them at bay until the winning stroke
with only 3 overs to go. Soccer again, and this time six-a-side.
In spite of playing on a full-size pitch some spirited and
determined play resulted in coming third - a very creditable
performance.

Although we do not seem to have submitted Branch news in recent
issues, things have not been altogether quiet in our part
of the world.
This year, we entered two teams in an inter-office Sports
quiz, unfortunately without a great deal of success. In July
our ladies entered the Institute five-a-side football competition
but regretfully lost their Preliminary round match with the
Eagle Star 1-0 this goal being scoredalmost on the final whistle.

men have offered their `services'
for serious training next year although they fared little
better when their turn came, succumbing to the `Royal' 2-0
in the second round.
We extend a warm welcome to Miss C. Guest from the `G.A.',
Miss V. Woodward from the `C.U.', Miss H. Randall as telephonist/recep-tionist
and D. Binks as a Trainee.
Earlier this year a number of our staff (including the Branch
Manager) attended the inaugural meeting of the Institute Public
Speaking Club. This was an enjoyable occasion even though
everyone was given the somewhat hair-raising experience of
addressing the audience for two minutes on selected subjects.
Gerry Harwood our Doncaster Resident Secretary is President
of the Doncaster Institute this year and we extend to him
our congratulations and sincere good wishes for a successful
year of office.
Paul Blenkin of our motor department was married on 2nd October
and on behalf of the Staff, Mr. Fenton presented him with
an AliBaba linen basket and non-stick saucepan. We wish Paul
and his wife Margaret a long and happy life together.
Mrs. Beal, formerly with our claims department, happily announced
the arrival of a daughter (Alison) on 9th October. Congratulations
to her and her husband who at one time worked in our motor
department. |
