Fire department
After a two-floor separation lasting over eighteen months,
the reunion of reinsurance and fire claims sections with the
remainder of fire department took place in June, when we all
converged on the third floor of the new extension. The actual
removal went very smoothly, thanks to Mr Orton's meticulous
planning and everyone's `getting stuck in'; thereupon we settled
down to get used to the informal layout of our desks, the
silence of the carpeted floor, the sight of `titles' sitting
unboxed, the curse of putting plug to point under hairy carpet
and vicious metal plate - and a little later (and more protractedly),
the various liquids produced by the `tea' machine! |

As regards personalities,
we congratulate Mike Wicks on becoming engaged to former colleague
Barbara Holt, Mr Orton and Renee Johnson on having serv(iv)ed
25 and 30 years respectively, as well as TV stars Frazer Broomby
and the versatile Jean Malkin who were both members of Kendal's
`It's a Knockout' team which performed against several Continental
teams at Solothurn in Switzerland after their victory over
Barrow-in-Furness.
Finally, we sadly report the death of Miss Emily Johnson,
who had suffered from arthritis for some years. She started
work at Head office as long ago as 1919, and was head of risking
section at the time of her retirement in 1956. |

Marine Underwriting
Mr L. A. Allen
Mr Allen, Assistant Marine Underwriter, retired on the 31st
March and I attach a photograph taken by one of our staff
members during his presentation party, which was held at 100
Cannon Street on the day of his retirement.
Mr Allen joined the Provincial in 1932 and his early days,
up to the time he went in the army during the war, were spent
on the non-marine side. Towards the end of the war, however,
he was invalided out of the Forces and, as at that time there
was a great need for marine staff, he was transferred to the
Marine Department. Having become very interested in the marine
side of our business he proceeded to study for his A.C.I.I.
(Marine Branch) and this was achieved in the late forties.
He was appointed an Assistant Marine Underwriter in 1965.
To commemorate the occasion of his retirement Mr Allen was
presented with a silver plated tray and tea service, and we
were pleased that Mrs Allen was able to attend.
J.M.
Mr C. D. Gilbertson retired on the 31st July,
1971 after 33 years' service with the Company. Mr Moon, the
Marine Underwriter, made the presentation to Mr Gilbertson
of gifts to which his colleagues in the department had subscribed.
