Cricket
After a good start to the season the team began to lose matches and finished up in the lowest position it has occupied in the Westmorland League for many years.
However as usual the team enjoyed its cricket and are hopeful of a better season in 1972.

This photograph should have appeared in the last edition, as Vina and Alan Rowntree have just celebrated their first wedding anniversary!

Congratulations to Margaret Stephens of the motor department on winning the `Miss Kendal' title for 1971. The competition was held during the Kendal Gathering fortnight, a feature of which was a torchlight procession through the town. Two Mardi-Gras heads were contributed by the Provincial depicting Edward Heath and Harold Wilson. Although not winning any prizes they drew applause from the crowd and not rotten eggs and fruit as forecast!
On Thursday, 14th October, fortythree Head office pensioners attended a `get together' in the staff canteen where a delightful afternoon tea had been prepared for them. They were welcomed by Mr J. W. Dugdale who said that he hoped this would be the first of many such meetings. Also present were representatives of H.O. departments who were able to bring pensioners up to date with news of the departments and ex-colleagues. Alto-

gether it was a very enjoyable afternoon, and already we are looking forward to the next `get together' in the spring.
The extensions to our building were finished mid-summer and most departments settled in their new environments by September.
Our best wishes go to David Briggs our ex-Local Manager of Westmorland office on his appointment as Assistant Branch Manager at Newcastle His colleagues at Head Office bought him a stainless steel tea service. We welcome his successor Anthonv Whittaker, ex-Resident Secretary at York.
On the sports field, claims department again won the seven-a-side football competition, this being for the third successive year.
In the putting competition Ralph Horne beat Peter Henderson in the final. There were 48 competitors in this event, a very commendable turn out!
