I sometimes suspect that if all the photographers in the world
were laid end to end, they would be rather uncomfortable. Moreover,
they would probably stretch from Melbourne to Manchester, clicking
furiously all the way. For there is no doubt that more and more
people are being attracted to photography. The mystique of the
light meter, the `f' stop and the shutter speed continues to cast
its spell over an increasing number of would-be Cecil Beatons,
many of whom are picking up the `patois' of photography from humble
Instamatic beginnings. In a world where more and more objects
are being prefixed by the word `instant', it was only a matter
of time before photography fell to the Philistinic (in the eyes
of the purist at least) ways of the world, and the `Instamatic'
camera made its debut.
